OBD2 Code Reader Question

Is the purchase on a generic OBD2 code reader a worthwhile tool to a DIY'er? I've seen several for around $150-175. I have a resource for Volvo P1 code definitions and realize that the codes are only clues to possible problems. I've done nearly all my own car repairs for over 25 years but now own my first OBD2 vehicle, a '98 XC. I'd appreciate the comments of those who use them or any techs here. Thanks.
