Multiple system failures 850 1997

Greetings,
Today, when my wife got home, she tell me there were several failures. The speedometer did not work, the odometer did not work, no turn signals, possibly no brake lights. As soon as she told me this, I took the car for a ride, and everything works again. Any ideas?
We have had the ABS/Trax light come on once (this did not happen in relation to todays problems) The ABS/Trax light has not come on lately. Could these problems she had today be related to all the corrosion on the battery terminals? I know, but I do plan to clean them Saturday. Anyway, it seems strange to have so many failures, then when the car is turned off and then restarted, all is well. What gives?
Also, which type of oil filter should I use (I don't want to pay $9.95 from the Volvo dealer for a Volvo filter)
