1994 Volvo 850 Evaporator Leak 850 1994

I've done the dye thing twice, once two years ago and again last month. This time my mechanic found the dye leak in the evaporator. Is this a common problem with all older Volvo's or just 850? Has Volvo improved this weakness in new models? I beleive its a leak in the evaporator and have no air after refilling the system just last month. So what should I do? The job to fix it is suppose to evolve pulling the steering wheel, air bag and front dash to get at the evaporator to replace it or about 1200-1300 dollars. If I keep the car another two years thats $50 a month for air (even in the winter), but I live in the south so it nice to be cool. The car is is very good shape and has been well mantained; it runs good for 123,000 miles. Should I sell it since it's only worth $5,000 or so; or fix it. Is there a different alternative to repairing this thing. Do all cars have the evaporators under the dash where you can get at them. I quess Air Conditioning is something new to the Swedes. They certainly didn't over-engineer this item. Any help or ideas here?
