climate control malfunction 850 1994

Middle knob controlling air flow direction not working at all; just a steady state flow out the main cabin vents; will not direct to windshield or floor; temperature controls L&R are functioning OK. A/C not working, but I believe that to be a charge issue. Any ideas?

Also, does anyone really know how to remove the manual gearbox shifter knob to allow replacement of the leather boot. Dealers do not know; some say it threads off, others say pull straight up, and last, but not least, one dealer said you have to `cut it off' and buy a new one! If that's the case, I'm really not impressed with where Volvo is heading!!. Anyone?
