S70M Input Shaft Bearing

Hi-

I posted this question awhile back and got no replies...here goes:

My 99 S70M makes a RPM-based ticking/clacking sound which goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. The noise is more pronounced when the car is warm. An indy mechanic I trust has diagnosed an input shaft bearing but says that this should be covered under my VIP Certified Warranty and that I should try to get the dealer to do the repair (and install a new clutch while they're at it). I bought my S70 14 months back with 43K. It now has 68K and is clattering away.

One Volvo dealer shop mechanic denied that he could hear anything out of the ordinary. He also was unable to drive a standard trans. Another heard the noise and diagnosed it immediately but when the car went in for the service 3 weeks later (the soonest I could get an appointment), they claimed to be unable to hear the noise. I'm at a loss.

Will failure of this bearing be catastrophic? Should I wait for it to get worse? I'm easy on clutches, historically. My last car, a 97 Subaru, went 115K on the original clutch in New York and New Jersey driving. I think Volvo should pony up but am unsure of how to proceed.

Jeff
