How to fix stripped odometer gear? 850

You really didn't "break" it by resetting the trip mileage function. The gear will tend to break anyway, and your action just gave it an excuse!

You can buy the actual component gear part for $25 from http://www.odometergears.com/

Follow the Bay13 instructions for removing the cluster. If you are even semi-mechanically inclined, this will take less than an hour. The cluster itself can then be disassmbled carefully and the gear replaced.

If your 850 is 1995 or older, you can read the actual odometer mileage electronically from the A/B cluster under the hood, and can set the mechanical indication to match. I know I've seen the instructions for doing this on the VolvoSpeed forum....
