Transmission shifting feels harsh. V70-XC70 1998

The transmission in my XC feels like it's shifting 'harder' than what is to be expected. I guess it's not apples to apples to compare it to other vehicles with automatic transmissions, but does the Volvo tranny just shift harsher by nature?... like a late 90's Subaru Legacy from 1st to 2nd gear. It's definitly not slipping. Is there 'fuzzy logic' in the tranny managment system b/c a lot of around town driving seems to calm the shift quality. Thanks.
