What I did (don't try this at home) 850 1996

..was attempt, as a preventive measure, to avoid the broken latch by generously lubricating the latch mechanism with synthetic grease.

So I removed it, and when I had it on my workbench, it flew apart with latch pieces landing all over the dark recesses of my basement.

So I wound up buying a new latch anyway.

The old latch looked just liked the new latch. I may be corrected by one of the Volvo experts here, but no, I don't believe there has been any improvement.
