Rattle rattle - catalytic converter 850 1996

Over the past few weeks a rattle has developed in the exhaust pipe. I have no ramps at home to enable an inspection - either cars are getting lower or my stomach is getting bigger but I just can't get far enough under to locate the source.

Garage guy tells me it's the catalytic converter that has broken lose and it's $AUS2000 (about $US1300 or E1150)for a new one but there are none in Oz anyway. An after-market one cost about $AUS800. Is this an urgent job, and is his diagnosis likely to be correct?
