Rear main seal 850 1997

I have a rear main seal leak, and am attending college about 500 miles away from home and need to drive home. Is it safe to do aslong as I keep tab on the oil level. Also what kind of damage can occur if I continue to drive with this leak, sense I can not afford to do the repair yet. I would appreciate any help.-Thnanks D
