stupid question but... 850

hello all i really like to know what is really the Liters thing in a car. for example cars that are 2.5 Liters (like ower 850s :)) or 1.6 Liters etc. well i know that the more liters the biger the engine and the more fuel consumption but i want to know 2.5 Liters of? i mean u have 250 lbs/ft of tork that spines the weels but these liters are what?

this question might seem stupid but i just like to know :) If i can have some explenation
