I'd change in two stages 850 1996

First, if your transmission is shot, changing fluid won't cure it. However, if the transmission is still good, changing fluid can help keep it that way.

Since the fluid is already discolored, I change it using non-synthetic ATF. If that helps the shifting, run it a few thousand miles to make sure everything is OK, then flush it again using synthetic ATF (I'm partial to AMSOIL).
