White smoke 850

I have (occasionally) noticed that my 1995 850 (aspo) produces huge plumes of white smoke when started. This is not very consistant, and I can go for weeks without it happening.

When it does happen, I notice a drop in coolant level - head gasket? If so, why doesn't it happen all of the time?

I have also noticed that I am burning oil. This varies wildly between 1 quart every 2000 miles (quite normal) to 1 quart every 300 miles?

Is this one problem or many?
