air conditioner air flow S70 1998

1998 S70. When first started in the morning with air conditioner off, then turned on with fan on lowest setting, it works just fine. If the fan is turned up to the last two highest settings, air flow from the vents slows to a trickle, and a roaring sound comes from the heater/air conditioner airbox area. This condition persists for the remainder of the day.

Anyone know what's happening? I'm 57 and have been working on my own cars for 40 years - incredibly handy with tools. Point me in the right direction and I will fix it.
