Gasoline smell in engine oil! 850

Dear All

I am probably going to open a can of worms by asking your opinions on oil.

I checked my oil level this morning after a run and after I let it cool for half an hour. The level was bang on and the oil had traces of black (poss carbon deposits?) BUT...

There was a distinct smell of gasoline in the oil. Is this fuel leaking down the bores? Will it weaken the oil? Or is it an additive put in by the oil producer (in this case Shell 10/40).

Any body got any recomenndations on a good quality motor oil. I am going to change it again soon, 500 miles since last change!

Thanks
