A mere compression test may not provide an answer but if it's bad rings, a cylinder leak down test will prove that. If you're sure that your flame trap and related PCV system is A-OK, the next step is to find a shop with a cylinder leak down tester. It's a tool that pressurizes each cylinder with compressed air and measure percentage of pressure loss with all valves in that cylinder closed. One does that with each cylinder.
