Yeah you can open the system but you'll need to replace the receiver/dryer can when you do. The material in the can absorbs moisture and exposure to the open air environment will saturate it pretty quickly. All service manuals recommend replacing the receiver/dryer anytime you open the system. Don't take the plugs out of the new one until just before you install it and seal the system back up. The receiver/dryer should be the last thing you install so it incures minimum exposure to the open air environment.
