'melting' rubber pad on ignition key V70-XC70 2000

This week I noticed that the rubber pad which covers the top part of the ignition key has a 'melted' and warped look to it. The metal part of the key is ok. Upon closer inspection, the top part of the gray pad has a small hole. I cannot recall doing anything damaging to it in any way. The V70 has a keyless remote entry /alarm system. I am wondering if there is anything electronic inside the padded area of the ignition key and when it has malfunctioned, it will leak ...and damage the gray rubber pads. Is that possible?

Do u think the warranty will cover a damaged key? i only have 23K miles on it and it is still under warranty.

when i insert the key to open the door, it is hard (but not impossible) to open the door. Would appreciate any insights.
