Rubber valve stem failure S70

I recently had a stem in a 16 inch alloy wheel rupture while parked for an hour or two. There was a big hole.
At a tire repair shop the worker ripped out the the old stem in pieces so I couldn't examine the rupture properly.
The stem's bits seemed to be made of thin soft rubber and was a bit sticky where cut.

The worker then installed a new stem by grabbing its protruding end with a pair of side cutters, firmly gripping
at the the cutter blades, and prying against the tire/rim. The blades provided a good grip but I suspect that a
slight cut can be made by the blades and that is how these failures are initiated. I looked but didn't see a visible
cut mark so didn't change the new stem. But thanks for reminding me to find some good quality stems and to
change mine all out w/o using side cutters. Interesting that they have failed while parked.
