Timing belt-can they go early? 850

Hi all. My '94 850 has done 105,000kms (about 70,000 miles).The Volvo recommended timing belt change is 120,000kms (80,000 miles). Question:Have they been known to break significantly before this time? I don't want to change the belt yet because it's expensive but I'm aware of the problems they cause if they go.
