The term can be applied to the evaporator on the AC system or the evaporative vapour control system for the emmissions controls. Others have replied to the AC system, so I will address the evaporative purge control system. The evap valve that would set off the check engine (Lamda or MIL) light is located just behind the radiator, near the top, left (driver's) side. On my 1994 turbo, it was located inside a foam cylindrical shroud about 2" dia. x 3 0r 4" long. Mine had failed by being stuck in the partially open position, and it can be tested simply by blowing or sucking on the stright-through port path. When the engine is cold, and without a signal from the ECU, it should not allow flow. If it does, it will set off an EVAP system code. A replacement for mine cost ~$200 canadian.
