The quietest known combination: OEM rotors, OEM pads, and OEM brake pad grease. Of these, the last two are the most important. The Volvo pad is made of a soft (dusty) compound that sponges up heat as it brakes the car. The high-temperature pad grease goes on the back of the pads and allows them to adjust for an instant as they 'bed' on braking. If the stuff you're putting on is sticky, you'll get squeaky brakes. I pay about $65 per rotor, and don't know the price of the pads because I never ask. The Volvo parts guy gives me the grease for free - comes in a Volvo OEM tube with enough grease for a 4-wheel brake job. It's not a bad DIY job, instructions (with photos) are at the volvospeed.com/bay13 site.

Brembos, slotted rotors, dust-free pads...they all have their advantages. But the trade off is noise, from growling (drilled rotors) to squealing (performance pads).
