yet another A/C question 850 1993

The air worked in my '93 854 pretty well (wasnt extremely cold but worked fine) until about a week ago when it abruptly stopped. ive heard a lot about the evap/condensor leaks etc. and was wondering if my symptoms would be reminicent of that.

The two lights on the dash are not blinking. the air does not work better at highway speeds. i dont use the climate control so i dont know if it keeps cycling or not, manually would it matter? i havent noticed anything leaking out under the car. (and yes, with the black leather it's blazing in the cabin)

Is this cause to replace something because of a leak or do i just need to pick up a recharge kit or get it recharged at a Jiffy Lube or somewhere? Is there a way you can convert it to a safer freon to prevent this in the future?

Thanks in advance!
