S80 T6 Starter problems S80 1999

We had the transmission fixed at a transmission shop. It works fine now but while in the shop developed starter problems. While starting it the RPM gauge spikes & the engine turns but is extremely difficult to start. It seems to be getting worse. Once started the car runs perfectly. Once after the third attempt to start it my husband gave it a little gas & it started. The next time we started it that did not help. So far it has always eventually started. Dealership said the crank shaft position sensor coded as problematic, but they checked it & it is fine & they checked wiring from the sensor a little way up & it was fine. They have given up & say the only thing they suggest is a wire harness change. 6 week job, $3,500 Canadian. They say it may be a wiring problem. They are not sure. I could go through that & it is still broken. Any suggestions? We leave for vacation in 1 week & need to drive for 2 days to get where we are going. Help. Sandy
