FYI: successful tailgate support strut replacement 850

I just replaced the two tailgate support struts in my 1995 850 wagon. The mission looks successful so far... the tailgate has a stronger swing up and doesn't fall so easily. The truth will be told in the winter ahead.

I used "genuine" Volvo struts (made in Germany) bought at the parts desk of my local authorized Volvo service centre for $80 Canadian each plus tax. I bit the bullet to go for the genuine goods after reading here that the aftermarket struts may not be as durable, esp in cold climates.

I followed the Haynes Repair Manual directions plus whatever tips I found on previous postings here. The only thing Haynes said to do that I didn't find necessary was to "remove the bracket securing the strut to the body".

Interior trim parts were R&R'd following Haynes' instructions with care and no problems, and the strut ball joints could snap off and on by hand.

I had a human helper as the "suitable prop" with a backup stepladder to support the tailgate when each strut was removed.

This was an easy DIY repair job that took half an hour. Thanks to all the postings here for the great information.
