I am happy with my 850 because it is trouble free. However, I drive carefully so that the transmission will not die (currently at 124k miles). My last car, a Honda Prelude, lasted 190k miles with original transmission.
In 1997, I paid half the cost of a turbo, so the deal was good. Currently, things are cheap and I recommend getting a car with a turbo. This is a heavy car and 170HP, like mine, (and gear ratio??) is no good.
I have heard that Volvo at that time made cars only in 3 or 4 locations in the world, in Europe. Mine came from Belgium. It is possible that some of their manufacturing line or work force had problems, creating problematic cars. You will hear quite a bit of problem on this board.
Rough idle: I have seen many people experienced rough idle with this car. It is a nuisance. You will hear that, it is due to the straight five-cylinder engine architecture. I am not sure if you can detect it in one or two test drive.
If you find an honest seller who can you that there were no bugs or constant problem with the car then you may look into this.
