Transmission Software-Why? V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 with 105K. Transmission has been shifting harshly from stop and after coasting and accelerating. So, I got the software update and some new synthetic fluid. Car has had every service and recall campaign since new. Runs great.

Transmission software update smoothed everything out. Why? Service Advisor clueless.

What does transmission software do? Does it compensate for wear in the transmission? If so, great idea. Or is it like windows and I'm paying a tech $160 to empty the temp files from the trash?
