possible causes of check engine light 850 1995

Check engine light just came on my 95 850 turb at 95000 miles and wanted to know what usually is gone bad for the light to come on..can i pull the codes from the engine area or do i need a OBD II for inside the car to figure out exactly what went wrong..

p.s for a while now before the light came on the exhaust on the car sound a little different when i was starting from stop and was not getting the power..wonder if this was related..

any help would be appreciated.
