AWD Basic Questions

Just now considering buying an AWD Volvo for my wife. All we've had so far have been 240's. Which years and models are pre-Ford AWD?? Are the model years after Ford took over the same quality? What can we expect to find in the $5,000 to $8,000 range? Are the AWD's as nice for the DIYer as the 240's? Thanks for your patience with these basic questions.
