gas cap and CE light 850

I have read previously about a bad gas cap setting off O2 check engine faults.
I have replaced all my vac elbows and noticed that I seem to get the code after i get gas. I get the whoosh when i take the cap off. After a some driving the light CE light comes on. dont know exactly when it comes on because i cover it with tape just in case its at light and the damn thing blinds me.
Is the gas cap / filling tank and CE light coming on all just a coincedence or do have to change the dreaded (pricy) o2 sensor eventually. So far I just keep resetting the computer for over a year now.
