horrible brake squeal 850

I read a post a week or so ago and someone responded suggesting the use of rayspestos brake pads (quietstop) from rock auto. My brake are howling, so I ordered a set of pads and plan on putting them in. The pads - which are for the front - came with a set of shims. My brakes have never had shims on the front, even when the dealer replaced them (my rear pads do have shims). My question is, do I use the shims, or are they included because some application s require them? I aould appreciate and help so I can get rid of these screeching brakes!

thanks
mark
