engine problem while on trip V70-XC70 2002

My wife took our 2002 V70 on a road trip with the kids. She's in rural Indiana, and a yellow exclamation point came on the dash, and the message center reads "Engine system service required". She called roadside assistance and they told her to drive to Dayton, Ohio to the Volvo dealer there, which is about an hour away, but they couldn't tell her if the car was safe to drive. First, does anyone know what that message means? It's not that it's time for regular service, the car's at just over 10k and I had the oil changed less than 3k ago, plus the next scheduled service is at 15k anyway. Second, isn't roadside assistance supposed to do more than tell you to drive to a dealer, even if that would harm the engine? I thought if you were on a trip they were supposed to pick up the car, get it fixed, and provide you with a car in the meantime. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
