Yet another 'service light' message thread S70 1999

I know there are two very recent threads regarding this matter but I didnt want to hijack them, although they were very informative, I figured i'd start my own with some of my questions.

My service light went on about 4 days ago at 42k Miles. In the previous threads regarding this matter they made it seem like it was no big deal and should be ignored. My question is, when should we not ignore this light? I dont know what their case may be, they might be people who service their own cars or know alot more than I to where they need not worry. But since i'm new to these things, I was wondering if I should take it to the dealer anyways. It was also suggested that this light comes on *ONLY* when the car needs an oil change.. but I was told that Volvos need to be full serviced at certain number of miles... for example where you had to take the car in at 25K, 45k and 75k (i'm sorta guessing these number cause I dont exactly remember) miles for certain and specific checks. So, could this be the case? Could the car need more than just an oil change??? Like I said, i'm not only new to Volvos but i'm new to cars in general... i'd really appreciate any help, suggestions or ideas. Thanks in advanced!
