850 transmission electrical problems 850 1994

Greetings,
have 2 volvos, but had similar problem with honda accord up and downshifting no ryhme or reason etc. after 2 weeks of driving to work with 2 gears, i searched and pulled out the electronic controller ECU for the trannie and opened up and discovered a water stain on the board! with a black smoke mark, replaced myself about $400 and worked , it might be the PNP switch also, it is a set of contact points which sends closures etc. to the transm. ECU, ive read that it is a common failure in 850,s
