Yet another 'service light' message thread S70 1999

I bought my Volvo at 32k Miles. Ever since then i've been getting an oil change every 3k miles and never had this light come on. I was reading the manual and it said that that light would come up at 12k miles intervals... but it doesnt exactly say what for. Also, I got a letter not too long ago from the dealer saying that my 45k service is almost due... but i'm not exactly sure what this service is for... i'm thinking this this light came on 42k miles, then it must be the dealer's "45k service." So i'm not sure exactly what to do and i'd hate to go through the dealer since I know they're gonna try to empty out my pockets. So what i'd like to know is does every Volvo need to go through this "45k service" and what exactly do they do to the car at this service? Thanks.
