Strut mounts or bushings ?

My 98 V70 is making a clunk noise in the right front wheel. When it went for the 30k service recently, the shop mentioned it was not the strut itself but the piece that it attached to at the top.

In the parts lists I see that there is a part called "strut mount" (mostly metal) and one listed as "strut mount bushing" (mostly or all rubber). Postings on this board mention replacing the strut mounts. Do those metal parts really get worn and those are the ones people usually replace, or is it just the rubber bushing ? BTW, the metal part costs like 5 times what the bushing costs (like $120 vs $24 each).
