Flame Trap Question 850 1996

I have read several posts about the importance of keeping the flame trap clean on normally aspirated engines since this device takes the place of a PCV valve.
While removing the flame trap for cleaning from my 96 850 (81K miles) I noticed that there are actually 2 nipples on the upstream end of the flame trap housing. There is an approximately 1/2" nipple as well as a smaller nipple. This 1/2" hose is obviously the hose through which most of the gasses flow. However I noticed on the small nipple that it had the remnants of a deteriorated small rubber hose stuck but there was no hose attached to it. I looked for the other end of the hose that may have been there at one times was was unable to find anything. Not having a hose attached to this smaller nipple would appear to create an opportunity for a vacuum leak.
Does anyone have any ideas where the smaller vacuum hose on the inlet side of the flame trap housing is supposed to be routed to??
