front o2 sensor 850

HI,
How do you know that it`s the O2 sensor? My wife has a 95 855 wagon & the check engine light came on a few months ago. The dealer tech told her it was the 02
sensor but a short time later the car started stalling out randomly. The problem was a fuel pump relay, it was replaced & the check engine light went out after it was replaced.
Anyway. my 02 cents worth.
