IPD brake upgrade 850

Yes, and it is well worth it. You'll be amazed how much more leverage you get just by moving the pads out 11 mm!!!! Upgrading the front brakes is a smart move. Significantly improves braking force/reduces panic stopping distance, however you must use 16" wheels -- you won't be able to fit your 15" rims over the calipers.

The caliper brace and 302mm (front) rotors are Volvo parts (stock on some of the R cars and C70):

Genuine Volvo Part Numbers: 302mm front brake upgrade
- Caliper brace to adapt from 280mm(11") rotor to 302mm(11 7/8") rotor: 8602456
- 302mm front rotor: 272276

but the after-market kits have everything you need (except tools). There is no need to use drilled or slotted rotors on the front if you are not racing(US wagon owners should consider drilled rotors for rear however. the bias on US market cars is more towards the rear hence they are more likely to warp, especially if you do a lot of city driving at low speeds) use the same pads (new ones) as with the stock 280mm rotors. If you are going to do this yourself be sure to use the Volvo anti-squeeeeeeeeeeel grease. And for goodness sakes, be sure to check the wheel bolt torque again after driving ~60 mi. Proper and symetrical wheel bolt torquing prevents warped rotors, as does following new rotor/pad "bedding and brake-in" procedure.

This is by far the most satisfying performance upgrade-- Pays for itself the very first time you stop a foot before you hit someone/something.

One more thing...before you go slammin' for your best 60-0 times...check your rearview mirror...big Volvo brakes are very very good--the guy behind you won't believe it.

Volvo also makes a "Mother of All Big Brake Kits" for the 850 series (racing), but it only fits under 17/18" rims. 320 mm rotors, 4 pot calipers...wooo haaa!

No need to buy aftermarket parts...Volvo has lots of secret performance parts in the bin...check out the Volvo/Ohlins "Roadholding/Lowering Kit"....yikes!
