OBD II - Is it worth getting a scanner? S80

After a GB£750 /~US$1200 bill from the dealer to replace my ABS & STC module, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile getting hold of one of the many OBD II scanners that connect to a PC or PDA. I would hope to be able to pull codes, and run diagnostics on the Volvo and some of our other cars. If the car wasn't already at the dealer, I had been offered a used ABS module & pump for GB£175, which I could have easilly fitted myself.

I know that a regular OBD II scanner will not return all the Volvo specific fault codes, but would the ones it does return provide sufficent information, combined with this forum and other internet sites, to diagnose most faults?

Also, does OBD II apply to S80 T6 cars that were purchased ouside the USA, most specifically the UK, or is there a different diagnostic connector/protocol used here?

Any guidance will be appreciated.
