'96 850T gear selection too free

A new to me 850T ('96, 101K) will freely shift between gears without any need for the shift button on the lever. Including shifting out of park without the brake depressed and shifting into R at any time. Other than that the car is really fast, kicks down well and generally behaves. Maybe a little reluctant to downshift on one or two take offs out of a days driving. Slip?

Also, the analog gas gauge does not register more than 1.4 tank although I am 380 digital miles from empty when I filled the tank.

Really happy with 240 mechanics, the 850 is all new to us.
