ENGINE/LIFTER NOISE - PLEASE HELP - VOLVO WON'T!!! 850

hi,

i've got a '96 850 t5 with a GENUINE 52,000 miles on it but over the past 2 months it has developed the following symptoms:

STARTING COLD (first thing in the morning): makes a loud rattle sound like the tappets for a few seconds

STARTING WARM (left to stand for 2-3 hours): makes a faint rattle sounds like the tappets for a few seconds

STARTING HOT (left to stand about half hour: makes a very faint rattle sounds like the tappets for a few seconds

RUNNING & IDLING: makes no noises

its had all its services from volvo and runs on semi-sythetic, tried synthetic made no difference. volvo said it was normal even after the master tech took the car home one evening-he said he couldn't here a thing (deaf *hit)!!!

my other 850 t5r with 120,000 mile is quieter than this one with half the mileage, any ideas!!!
