Gear selector failure 850 1996

This problem involves a non-active gear selector mechanism that allows the shifter to be pushed into an gear at any time. No function at the gear selector "trigger".
The brake activated switch that normally allows shifter movement when you step on the brake does produce an audible click at the shifter. But the button/cable operated gear selection is non functional so whatever mechanism is triggered when the gear selector button is pushed, is not working. Does anyone know if the selector cable operates at the base of the selector via a lock /pin mechanism? Or does the cable run to the tranny activating there? Any thoughts on what might be broken?
