Stereo system 850

Has anyone had the problem of having to put their code into their Volvo stereo system after the electrical source (battery replaced) has been interrupted?
The mechanic replaced the battery and then was unable to input the correct security code and after three tries, he was locked out and received an error message.
I have followed the directions in the owners manual and put the key in ignition position #1, had the stereo on and waited two hours for the error message to clear. No luck.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Fred.
