ac problem, temp gauge maxed 850 1996

Mom has a 96 850 Turbo. They called and said the ac was not working. Step dad got in and noticed that the temp gauge was maxed out. I figured that maybe the thermostat was stuck and it overheated, tripping some sensor and causing the ac to shut down. When I got there hours later, the ac compressor wasn't coming on, but the temp gauge was still maxed out even though the car had cooled down. So I'm thinking there is an electrical problem somewhere. Anybody recognize these symptoms? Where should I start looking?

No fuses are blown, but I'm not sure if there is a separate ac fuse.

Thanks,
Garrett
