Check Engine Light 850

Howdy, I'm new to this site, and to be honest, I don't know that much about cars. I have a 1995 850 wagon with 217,000 miles. Last month I put a new starter in it. Today the "check engine" light went on. The car makes a very loud noise when accelerating now. I can think of a couple of reasons for this: muffler is shot, timing belt needs to be replaced, needs emissions cleaner fluid, fuel inline filter needs to be changed.

I'm worried that these problems will keep coming along, but I expect to get to 300K in my car. Can anyone offer any advice? Also, how much will these options cost? I can't fix cars myself and I'm on a tight budget. Thank you all for your help.
