It is simple to remove. The ABS module is located below the engine fuse box. Disconnect battery. Open the fuse box cover. Remove the fuse box, torx screws if I recall. Move it out of the way. Also, disconnect the ABS cable connection...I spray electrical contact cleaner on the contacts. Torx screws (4)hold the ABS module in place from the underside. It is a challenge to open the module when removed but you may find the problem as I did. I used a dremel tool to cut around the outer cover around its perimeter.
There is an electrical device square shaped, called a QFP, Quad Flat Pack. I found a solder bridge on the pins of the device and removed the bridge or solder ball that was shorting two leads together. A dental pick and 10X magnifying lens will help you find it and remove it. If not, a soldering iron may be needed to remove it. That was my problem and I have not seen the message for several months now.
I doubt the ads to repair these modules. If they have no test equipment to test at the component level, how do they know parts are bad. I can't imagine caps failing in 4-5 years. I do believe Volvo has questionable suppliers making these costly electronic devices. The solder defects from the supplier may be what they are repairing.
