Engine cutting out under hard acceleration S70

Hello,

I've got a 98 S70 T5. While on the highway cruising at around 100km/hr (60 mph) and trying to make a pass, the tranny drops a gear(Which is a good thing) and the engine revs climb until about 4500 rpm. This is where my trouble begins.

At around 4500 rpm, the engine seems to sputter/hesitate and almost shuts down completely. The Check engine light came on along with the sputter today. This problem doesn't happen every time I try to make a pass on the highway, and today is the first time the engine light came on at the same time. I also smelled what I thought was a catalytic converter type of smell.

Anyone know what might cause this? Any fixes?

Thanks for your help.
