Shift knob is self-destructing !!!!!!!!!!!!! 850 1994

The shift knob on my '94 850 is falling apart little by little. The problem started a couple of months ago. A piece of the rubber knob above the shift release button just fell off. Now it seems that every few days, a little more crumbling occurs. It looks like there may be a hard plastic inner shell to stop the progression, but that's not much consolation when the entire knob is laying on the center console in little pieces. By the way, it falls apart on it's own and is not the result of my brutal attack. No rodents either.

Anyone else experienced this same thing? Do I really have to go to the dealer and buy a new knob? I can't imagine that it is going to be any fun to replace either.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dan
