my 850 in general 850 1993

ok, so i bought a used 850 with 225 k, which i like a lot, but it had an oil leak, which i alleviated somewhat by changing the flame trap, which was terribly clogged, and not so hard to change as some would have you believe, but of late, the entire running condition of the car seems a bit challenged - i'm getting surges when it idles, and perhaps it needs a tune-up - or something. i suppose the clogged flame trap caused some leakage of the seals, but as i said, the evidence of oil leaking has diminished since putting in the new flame trap. but what happens is, when i start it up, it coughs and chokes a bit as if it will stall but it doesn't. maybe i should get new spark plugs, but i don't know. i just want to do what i can to it on my own without spending a ton of money. i also noticed last night that the lights on the automatic shift indicator went dark so i can't what gear it's in. but otherwise its a great car. my 240 DL is still sitting in the driveway as a back up but i'm just curious what i might do to help with the 850?
